Interpretation:
The reason behind the inability of the brain to use fatty acids as fuel has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
The major source of the brain remains the glucose in normal physiological conditions while starvation shifts its fuel source to ketone bodies.
The brain uses ketone bodies when there is an excessive accumulation of fatty acids, and the amount of glucose available for the cells of the central nervous system is too low. This normally happens when the body starves, and thus the glycogen stores are almost depleted.
