Summary Introduction

To determine:

The conditions that stimulated Mark to breathe harder, its effect on PCO2 , and potential changes in blood pH . Also, determine whether low or high oxygen is reaching the blood.

Concept introduction:

The oxygen content in the atmosphere is 21%. As a person goes up the altitude, the partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) decreases. An individual breathes harder while climbing mountain so as to provide sufficient oxygen to the body. Otherwise, low oxygen content would lead to hypoxia.

How would carbon dioxide loading/oxygen unloading at systemic tissues be affected if a person was exposed to a chemical that blocked the action of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase? Explain why.
Some patients with hypertension (high blood pressure) are given beta-blocking drugs to lower their blood pressure. How does this effect occur? Explain why these drugs are not administered to patientswith a history of asthma. Why might drinking coffee help asthma?
in thalassemia, a type of anemia, the hemoglobin molecule is malformed. The malformation prevents hemoglobin from carrying and delivering the correct amount of oxygen to the cells. Which important physiological concept does this example illustrate?
