Explanation of Solution
Introduction: Polymers are large molecules having high molecular mass, formed by joining of repeating structural units called monomers.
Three groups of polymers are:
- Natural polymers
- Plastics
- Synthetic fibers:
These polymers occur naturally and are found in plants and animals. For example: proteins, cellulose, starch and rubber.
Uses: cellulose is used to make paper; resins are used in the production of adhesives; rubber is used for adhesives and insulation.
Plastics are
Uses: plastic is used in making plastic bottles, tubes, plastic films, among its innumerable uses.
These are also synthetic polymers. For example nylon, polyester, and acrylic.
Uses: nylon is used making ropes, carpets, fabrics; polyester is used in making films, clothing material and ropes.
Conclusion: The polymers form the backbone of major industries such as plastics, paints, fibers and elastomers.
