Chapter 24, Problem 1LO
Summary Introduction

To explain: The metabolic and structural changes in the tissues of the body that occur with aging.

Concept introduction: Aging is a natural and irreversible process. The aging process is based on a person’s congenital traits, health status, and lifestyle. The body cells, tissues, and organs are collectively affected by aging and these changes have an effect on the homeostasis.

Explanation of Solution

The body cells, tissues, and organs are affected by the aging changes and these changes have an effect on all the body system functions.

The metabolic changes in the body tissues due to aging are as follows:

  • Cellular reproduction will slow down due to the slower metabolic rate and result in the reduced tissue repair.
  • As the aging continues, waste products will build up in tissues and the tissues become less functional which may result in organ failure.

The structural changes in the body tissues as a part of aging are as follows:

  • During aging, the connective tissues become rigid that make the organs and blood vessels also more rigid. The reduced elasticity of connective tissue will cause an increased wrinkling of the skin and increased tendency for bones to break in the older people.
  • As the aging continues, collagen cross-linkages or abnormal structures in tissues and organs will be more in number. The change in the elastic fiber and collagen fiber structure will reduce the flexibility of the arterial walls.
