Concept explainers
(a)
To calculate: The contour length of a segment of B-DNA of 50,000 kb.
Concept introduction: A section of DNA that usually codes for a protein is called as gene. The length of the DNA is calculated for different studies related to a particular gene in order to differentiate between the coding and non-coding region. B-DNA is one and most common form of DNA present in organisms. X-ray crystallographic studies have revealed some forms of DNA that have variation from the ideal B-DNA.
(b)
To calculate: The length of the DNA as packaged in nucleosomes with linker histones present.
