Chapter 24.7, Problem 1CR
Summary Introduction
When a child is born, its gut is initially sterile (free of any microbe), but it soon gets colonized after the child gets exposed to the environment. Gut microbial community consists of all the microorganisms that are associated with the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The gut of an infant is mainly dominated by the presence of Bifidobacterium, which is a fermentative anaerobic organism, but the gut microbial community keeps changing with the type of feed, that is provided to the child.

Vitamin D deficiency can often be found as a single nutrient deficiency, that is, in an otherwise well-nourished person. Which of the following is the most likely reason?
Question 100 options:
a)
Most vitamin D in the body does not come from natural sources in food, so access to food is not an important determinant of vitamin D status
b)
The individual has decreased intrinsic factor in the stomach
c)
Diets containing sufficient nutrients to promote growth can increase the requirements for vitamin D
d)
The content of vitamin D in foods depends on the soil in which the food was grown
Gut commensal bacteria are beneficial to animal nutrition including humans. For non-fermenting animals such as humans, select the answer that describes the greatest benefit of gut microflora on nutritional physiology.
Select one:
a.
Absorption of carbohydrates
b.
Removal of water
c.
Production of some types of essential vitamins such as biotin and vitamin K
d.
Generation of gases necessary for proper elimination
At a 12 month well baby visit, the infant is found to be at the 85th percentile for length but has dropped from the 85th to the 50th percentile for weight. The mother reports having difficulty introducing solid foods, and nursing very frequently. What is likely to be the cause of the weight change?
Question 61 options:
a)
The baby is relying on nursing as they are allergic to the new foods being introduced
b)
The baby’s iron stores have run out and are not being replenished with iron-rich foods
c)
Breastmilk is no longer providing sufficient protein for their growth needs
d)
The baby is thinning out as they begin walking and becoming more active
