Chapter 24.8, Problem 3MQ
Summary Introduction

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) consists of all the organs that are involved in the function of taking in food, digesting the food, and also expelling the waste material out of the body. In mice the major GI organs are mouth, stomach, cecum, and colon.

Gut microbiome studies are conducted in animal models. For example: mice, because they are easy to manipulate, have short life cycle, and have low maintenance costs.

Over the years research shows  the effect of dietary interventions (prebiotic spike-ins, meal replacement) on the gut microbiome and found some interesting (and mixed!) results.  Can the  use of dietary supplements/meal replacement strategies  used in a clinical/healthcare setting to help people with certain gut conditions? What will be some  positives and negatives to using these dietary therapies?
Penicillin was first used in the 1940s to treat gonorrhea infections produced by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. In 1984, according to the CDC, fewer than 1% of gonorrhea infections were caused by penicillin-resistant N. gonorrhoeae. By 1990, more than 10% of cases were penicillin resistant and a few years later the level of resistance was 95%. Explain the various ways this resistance could be spread among the cells. Could this resistance pass to other infectious bacteria from N. gonorrhoeae?
Is the human gut microbiome contains trillions of microbes that both influence and are influenced by emotional and cognitive areas of the brain?
