Chapter 25, Problem 18TYR
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Microvilli are a type of internal projections in the small intestine. These are smaller extensions of the plasma membrane that forms a brush border at each enterocyte’s surface. Brush border enzymes are present in the plasma membrane that carry out the final stages of the digestion process. These enzymes are not secreted into the lumen, so chyme reaches the brush border for digestion. This activity is known as contact digestion. Microvilli increase the surface area (digestion) by a factor of 20.

The rate-limiting enzyme in bile acid synthesis is _____________.
We have discussed the process of digestion and absorption for all 3
macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and-fats) in great detail. Now its time to
test your knowledge. For this essay question write a short but concise description
(story) of the digestive and absorptive process for FATS, starting from the mouth
and ending when the absorbed products are in the blood of the arteries and
available for utilization by the cells of the body. Asume that the starting
molecule is a triglyceride and include descriptions of all mechanical and chemical
digestive steps and the locations where they occur, a clear description of how the
end products are absorbed into the enterocytes, and then how they get from the
enterocytes to the systemic circulation.
Many people who are lactose intolerant can eat yogurt, which is prepared from milk curdled by bacteria, without any digestive problems. Give a reason why this is possible. (Hint: Read the label on each of several yogurt containers. Do the ingredients make a difference?)
