Chapter 25, Problem 2Q
Summary Introduction
To review:
The bacteria, which are most appropriate to use in therapy for curing the tumor.
Introduction:
Cancer is the condition of abnormal and uncontrollable growth of the cells. Treatment of cancer includes surgery and different kinds of therapy, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. All these methods have limitations and severe side effects. To overcome these limitations, medical field started using certain bacteria to treat solid tumors.
The table given below gives details of characteristics of four bacteria.

Obligate anaerobic | Obligate aerobic | Facultative anaerobic | Facultative anaerobic | |
Gram status | + | – | – | – |
Optimal temperature (°C) | 10–40 | 50–80 | 5–30 | 10–30 |
Typical habitat | Terrestrial | Aquatic | Aquatic | Aquatic |
Miscellaneous | Chemotroph | Denitrifier | Nitrogen fixer |

Mycoplasmas are pleomorphic bacteria. How do the unique structural characteristics of mycoplasmas relate to their bacterial morphology?
Mycoplasmas have a low G + C genome content.
Mycoplasmas appear Gram negative when a Gram stain is performed.
Mycoplasmas lack a cell wall.
Mycoplasmas form colonies with a fried-egg appearance.
Select all statements that are true regarding
members of the genus Mycobacterium.
O They contain mycolic acids
O They can cause tuberculosis
O One species causes tuberculosis
O They are proteobactria
O They are practically impenetrable by
antibiotics
O Their cell walls lack peptidoglycan
O They are easy and fast to grow under
laboratory conditions
Name two methods of control of growth for Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogen in a patient with the disease and when confronted with the pathogen outside of the host. Be careful to specify if it is a physical method or a chemical method (check lecture to differentiate these two). Control of growth means how would you deal with an infection related to a person as well as how would you minimize the presence of the bacteria on a surface or object.

View Available Hint(s) for Part H The blood clots are a necessary food source for the bacteria. Blood clot can hide bacteria from the immune system. A blood clot leads to tissue necrosis or death, a necessary condition for infection. The blood clots cause disease, which is the intended purpose of the bacteria.arrow_forwardMost medically useful antibiotics interfere with either peptidoglycan synthesis or ribosome function. - A boy with advanced Duchenne muscular dystrophy developedpulmonary edema (accumulation of fluid in the lungs) and pneumoniacaused by a bacterial infection. His physician diagnosed the conditionin the following way: The pulmonary edema was the result of heartfailure, and the increased fluid in the lungs provided a site wherebacteria could invade and grow. The fact that the boy could notbreathe deeply or cough effectively made the condition worse.
