Chapter 25, Problem 66AP
A laboratory (astronomical) telescope is used to view a scale that is 300 cm from the objective, which has a focal length of 20.0 cm; the eyepiece has a focal length of 2.00 cm. Calculate the angular magnification when the telescope is adjusted for minimum eyestrain. Note: The object is not at infinity, so the simple expression m = fo/fe is not sufficiently accurate for this problem. Also, assume small angles, so that tan θ = θ.

Consider a refracting telescope that is made with two converging lenses- an objective lens (focal length 1.00m) and an eyepiece (focal length 50.0mm). The lenses are separated by a distance of 1.025m. If the viewer is looking at a distance object, such as craters on the moon, where will the final image of the eyepiece be located? (Note that this may not be the optimum construction to provide the greatest magnification.)
Martha is viewing a distant mountain with a telescope that has a 120-cm-focal-length objective lens and an eyepiece with a 2.0 cm focal length. She sees a bird that's 42 m distant and wants to observe it. To do so, she has to refocus the telescope.
By how far must she move the eyepiece in order to focus on the bird?
Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
In which direction must she move the eyepiece in order to focus on the bird?
A. toward the objective
B. away from the objective
C. She doesn't need to move the eyepiece.
D. None of the above.
An objective of an astronomical telescope has a diameter of 12.5 cm and a focal length of 85.0 cm. When it is used with an eyepiece having a focal length of 2.50 cm and a diameter of 1.50cm, what will be (a) the angular magnification, (b) the diameter of the exit pupil, (c) the object-field angle, (d) the image-field angle, and (e) the eye relief?
