Many travelers avoid drinking the water in foreign countries but forget that ice is often made with local tap water! (Diarrhea is characterized by loose watery bowel movements that, if left untreated, can cause serious health complications.) It is estimated that each year such "traveler's diarrhea" affects as many as 10 million Americans. High-risk destinations include the lesser-developed countries of Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and regions of Asia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains a website to advise travelers.
