Concept explainers
To explain:
DNA sequence data for diplomonad, euglenozoan, a plant and an unidentified protist suggest that the unidentified species is mostly closely related to the diplomonad. Further studies reveal that the unknown species has fully functional mitochondria. Based on these data, at what point on the Phylogenetic tree given in Figure 25.9 “Exploring Eukaryotic Diversity”, in the textbook, did the mystery protists lineage probably diverge from other eukaryotic lineages.
Introduction:
The diplomonads are the group of flagella containing organisms and are mostly

- MAKE CONNECTIONS The bacterium Wolbachia is asymbiont that lives in mosquito cells and spreads rapidlythrough mosquito populations. Wolbachia can make mosquitoes resistant to infection by Plasmodium; researchersare seeking a strain that confers resistance and does notharm mosquitoes. Compare evolutionary changes thatcould occur if malaria control is attempted using such aWolbachia strain versus using insecticides to kill mosquitoes. (Review Figure 28.16 and Concept 23.4.)arrow_forward5)Which of the following observations constitutes evidence that mitochondria evolved before chloroplasts? Mitochondria are aerobic. Chloroplasts are photosynthetic. Aerobic bacteria evolved before photosynthetic bacteria (cyanobacteria). Some protists have separately evolved their own plastids (chloroplast-like structures) through endosymbiosis of cyanobacteria, or even through endosymbiosis of photosynthetic protists. All Eukaryotes have mitochondria; only a subset of Eukaryotes have chloroplasts.arrow_forward. WHAT IF? Suppose ctenophores are basal metazoansand sponges are the sister group of all remaining animals.Under this hypothesis, redraw Figure 32.11 and discusswhether animals with tissues would form a clade.arrow_forward
- WHAT IF? Snails eat algae, whose growth is stimulated by nutrients foundin fertilizer. How would the contamination of irrigation water with fertilizerlikely affect the occurrence of schistosomiasis? Explain.arrow_forwardBulleted items are choices for questions Protists, as a group, represent one of the kingdoms of organisms in the eukaryotic domain. In the other kingdoms, the organisms grouped within a kingdom are very closely related and share many unifying features. The many different organisms grouped as protists are not necessarily closely related, and many different types of traits are represented among them. Review the following list of statements, and select which statements are correct descriptions of protists. Check all that apply. Protists represent both heterotrophic and autotrophic nutritional modes. Some protists are colonial. No protists are multicellular. The phylogenetic tree displayed here shows the evolution and relationships between different major protist groups, as scientists currently understand them. It also shows how these different groups of protists are related to animals, fungi, and land plants. The protist groups are highlighted in tan boxes.…arrow_forwardCoral reefs, bleaching, and climate change Where are the dinoflagellates located inside the coral polyp? What part of the dinoflagellate (the algae) is actually damaged by excess energy When stimulated by too much energy (light or heat), what does the algae begin to produce? And how does this product impact the coral poly? Why is bleaching so detrimental to the coral animal itself? Why is bleaching damaging to the entire reef ecosystem?arrow_forward
- WHAT IF? High water temperatures and pollutioncan cause corals to expel their dinoflagellate symbionts. How might such “coral bleaching” affect corals andother species?arrow_forwardRedraw the phylogeny of eukaryotes, expanded to show different members (e.g. dinoflagellates, diatoms) of the supergroups as necessary and indicate the location of the primary endosymbioses for mitochondria and chlorophyll on the phylogeny. Indicate the location of three secondary endosymbioses leading to chloroplasts and one location showing the loss of mitochondria on the same phylogeny.arrow_forwardWHAT IF? How might a sudden and dramatic change inyour diet affect the diversity of prokaryotic species thatlive in your digestive tract?arrow_forward
- True or false? Some protists start out life with no nucleus.arrow_forwardEVOLUTION LINK Why are the protists considered paraphyletic? Use Figure 26-3 to help explain your answer.arrow_forwardWe discussed two theories of the evolution of multicellularity in the animals, the Colonial Theory and the Syncytial Theory. For each of the two theories, give a brief summary of the theory and describe the characteristics you would expect to find in the protist ancestor proposed by each theory.arrow_forward
