Interpretation: To explain why scintillation counters are used over the Geiger counter to search radioactive isotopes in airports.
Concept Introduction: Some devices are used to detect radiation. The radiations that are emitted by the radioisotopes are called ionizing radiations.
Answer to Problem 30LC
The sensitivity of scintillation counters is much more than Geiger counters, it can detect radiations that are not detected by the latter.
Explanation of Solution
The radiations that are emitted by radioisotopes have large energy that they can even knock off electrons from atoms, producing ions. Thus, the radiations that are emitted by the radioisotopes are called ionizing radiations.
These radiations cannot be detected easily with the eyes, ears, or nose. Thus, to detect these radiations some devices are used that are as follows:
- Geiger counter
- Scintillation counters
- Film badges
Geiger counters are less sensitive than scintillation counters, which interprets that the latter can detect some radiations that are not detected by the Geiger counter.
Scintillation counters are used to monitor the way of radioactive materials through airports.
Thus, in airports in detecting radioisotopes, scintillation counters are preferred over Geiger counters.
