When the levels of cholesterol rise abruptly then it is a condition known as hypercholesterolemia. When this disease is genetic then it is known as familial hypercholesterolemia. In this disease, the concentration of cholesterol is very high even in young children. Causes of familial hypercholesterolemia are a mutation that results in this disease. Also, the malfunctioning of the Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) receptor results in this disease.
