Chapter 26.6, Problem 1TQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The reasons that make results inconclusive in the provided case.
Introduction:
Septicemia is a condition in which virus and bacteria are present in the blood and it is also known as blood poisoning. The presence of a virus in the blood is called viremia while the presence of bacteria is called bacteremia. Different types of pathogens can grow, replicate, and produce septicemia in optimal conditions. Septicemia can arise from an infection in any part of the human body.

The organism tested on Blood Agar (plate shown furthest to the left) is:
a. Micrococccus luteus
b. Staphylococcus aureus.
c. Staphylococcus epidermidis
You know because of which specific features of the hemolytic reaction
The patient, who presented with complaints such as sore throat, fever, weakness, and swollen tonsils, was examined by an ear, nose and throat doctor. Having diagnosed the patient with Streptococcus pyogenes pharyngitis, the doctor requested a throat culture from the patient to confirm the accuracy of the diagnosis.
a. In which environment does the Laborant develop Streptococcus pyogenes in the throat culture taken from the patient with a swab? Explain by explaining.
b. Laborant is Strep in mixed culture, which is formed as a result of throat culture that he developed (cultivated). Using which methods to analyze and determine pyogenes phenotypically?
c. Phenotypically detected Strep. The laboratory technician, who differentiates the pyogenes from other bacterial species in the environment, develops the bacteria in which specific environment using which method? Explain by explaining.
Based on the journal article “Interpretation of the Tube Coagulase Test for
Identification of Staphylococcus aureus”, what should be the result to conclude the
organism is S.aureus? When is it necessary to have supplemental tests done for the
identification of S.aureus?
