The electron transport is accompanied by an accumulation of protons in the intermembrane space of the mitochondria. This creates osmotic pressure and the protons are driven back to the mitochondrion under the pressure. The passage of ions from the cytoplasmic side into the matrix of the mitochondria generates mechanical energy.
