Write the expression charge on C1.

  Q=C1V                                                                                                              (II)

Here, Q is the charge on C1, V is the voltage across C1.

Write the expression to find the voltage across the parallel combination.

  Vn=QCeq                                                                                                             (III)

Here, Vn is the voltage across the parallel combination.

Substitute equation (I), (II) in (III) to find the voltage across the parallel combination.

  Vn=C1VC1+C2

Write the equation for initial energy in the capacitor C1.

  U1=12C1V2                                                                                                             (IV)

Re-arrange the above expression to find the maximum point for U2.

  U2=U1C1C2(C1+C2)2=1C1C2+2+C2C1U1

Substitute x for C1C2 to find the maximum point for U2.

  U2=1x+2+1xU1

The denominator has to be minimum to maximize the U2. The value of x+2+1x will be minimum when the derivative of x+2+1x is equal to zero.

Differentiate x+2+1x with respect to x and equate to zero to find the maximum point for U2.
