Chapter 28, Problem 17E
Summary Introduction

To explain: The reason why natural selection has favored the instability of RNA.

Introduction: Earlier it was suggested by RNA world hypothesis that genetic continuity and development of life on Earth was through replication of RNA. It was believed that in primitive cells, RNA catalyzed chemical reactions and stored genetic information. RNA has the properties of self-replication and catalyzes its own synthesis. During evolution as a result of natural selection, DNA took over as genetic material, and proteins became structural cell components and major catalysts.
