Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The codons with a pyrimidine base C or U as the second base has to be compared whether the majority of amino acids coded by these codons are having hydrophilic or hydrophobic side chains.
Concept Introduction:
The amino acids whose side chains are not present in contact with the aqueous medium or the side chains are inside the protein core are said to be hydrophobic amino acids. The amino acids with hydrophobic side chains are Alanine, Valine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Proline, Phenylalanine, Methionine and Tryptophan.
The amino acids whose side chains are present in contact with the aqueous medium are said to be hydrophilic amino acids. The amino acids with hydrophilic side chains are Serine, Threonine, Cysteine, Asparagine, Glutamine, Histidine, Lysine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Arginine, Glycine and Tyrosine.

- Describe the experiment that allowed researchers to first identify the codon for a specific amino acid.arrow_forwardExplain why the base sequence AGAC could not be a codon.arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements about the genetic code are true and which are false? Correct each false statement. a.Each codon is composed of four bases. b.Some amino acids are represented by more than one carbon. c.All codons represent an amino acid. d.Each living species is thought to have its own unique genetic code. e.The codon AUG at the beginning of a sequence is a signal for protein synthesis to begin at that codon. f.It is not known if the code contains stop signals for protein synthesis.arrow_forward
- Suppose that 28% of the nucleotides in a DNA molecule are deoxythymidine 5'-monophosphate, and that during DNA replication the percentage amounts of available nucleotide bases art 22% A, 22% C, 28% G. and 28% T. Which base would be depleted first in the replication process?arrow_forwardUsing the information in Table 22-2, determine what amino acid is coded for by each of the following codons. a. GUA b. CCC c. CAC d. CCAarrow_forward
