Interpretation:
The main classes and subclasses of enzyme of that catalyze the first two steps in the conversion of tyrosine to epinephrine has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Hormones: Hormones are chemical messengers which are secreted by the cell in endocrine system and are transported along the blood to stimulate the target cells having the corresponding receptors.
Enzyme: Enzyme is a protein or a molecule which can act as a catalyst for a biological reaction. It does not affect the equilibrium point of the reaction. Enzyme’s activity can be specific which means the activity is limited to a certain substrate and a certain type of reaction and it is referred to as specificity of the enzyme.
Classification of enzymes:
- Oxidoreductases: Used to catalyze
oxidation-reduction reactions . - Transferases: Used to catalyze transfer of a
functional group from one molecule to another. - Hydrolases: Used to break a large molecule into smaller ones using water.
- Isomerases: Used to catalyze isomerization reactions.
- Lyases: Used to catalyze addition or removal of a small molecule.
- Ligases: Used to catalyze the bonding of two substrate molecules.

- What peptides are expected to be produced when the A chain of bovine insulin (Figure 5.16) is cleaved by (a) chymotrypsin, or (b) trypsin, or (c) carboxypeptidase A?arrow_forwardA female neonate did well until approximately 24 hours of age when she became lethargic. A sepsis workup proved negative. At 56 hours, she started showing focal seizure activity. The plasma ammonia level was found to be 1,100 μmol/L (normal 5–35 μmol/L). Quantitative plasma amino acid levels revealed a marked elevation of argininosuccinate.19.3 Which one of the following enzymic activities is most likely to be deficient in this patient? EXPLAIN your answerA. Arginase.B. Argininosuccinate lyase.C. Argininosuccinate synthase.D. Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I.E. Ornithine transcarbamoylase.arrow_forwardWrite a balanced equation for the hydrolysis of cyclic GMP, catalyzed by CGMP phosphodiesterase. Would you expect an inhibitor of this enzyme to potentiate or antagonize the action of Viagra? Explain.arrow_forward
- What are the physiological effects of prostaglandins, explain how aspirin can block the synthesis of prostaglandins?arrow_forwardMetformin is a commonly used treatment for type 2 diabetes. The active compound was isolated from the french lilac plant and was first used in the 1770s to treat individuals with excessive thirst and frequent urination (LaMoia & Shulman, 2020). Its exact mechanism of action is still under debate, but it ultimately works to lower blood glucose levels. Which of the following proposed mechanisms could explain how metformin works? O inhibits the function of liver glycogen synthase, an enzyme involved in glycogenesis O increases the release of glucagon by the pancreas O decreases gluconeogenesis in the liver O inhibits the breakdown of triglycerides in adipose tissuearrow_forwardInhibitors of acetylcholinesterase, such as edrophonium, are used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. The substrate for acetylcholinesterase is acetylcholine. Structures are attached. What kind of inhibitor is edrophonium? Explain. Can inhibition by edrophonium be overcome in vitro by increasing the substrate concentration? Explain. Does this inhibitor bind reversibly or irreversibly to the enzyme? Explain.arrow_forward
- Write schematically the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine from phosphatidylethanolamine. What compounds are necessary for this biochemical process? Biological significance of phospholipids.arrow_forwardAnswer the following step by step A) How many milliliters of 1:100 epinephrine are needed for a 5 mg dose? B) How many milligrams are there in a 1cc dose of 2% Xylocaine? C)You have 20% acetylcysteine; how many milliliters do you need of this to form 4 ml of 8% solution?arrow_forwardBodybuilders use a variety of anabolic substances to gain mass. Two such compounds are insulin and trenbolone. Insulin has significant anabolic and anti-catabolic properties and impacts the metabolism of various macromolecules, not just that of carbohydrates. Trenbolone binds the androgen receptor with an affinity five times higher than that of testosterone and is popular for its fat-burning and anabolic properties. H. Trenbolone C18H2202 Insulin C257H383NosO77S6 How do the different targets, mechanisms of action and durations of each drug ultimately lead to the same desired effect (increase in lean body mass)?arrow_forward
- What are the two essential amino acids in the active site of chymotrypsin?arrow_forwardEpinephrine stimulates glycogen breakdown by activating glycogen phosphorylase. However, in the research lab, no glycogen breakdown occurred when epinephrine was added to a test tube containing the enzyme and its substrate, glycogen. Explain why glycogen phosphorylase could be activated by epinephrine only when the hormone was added to intact cells in a solution.arrow_forwardCorticosteroids (a type of hormone), and Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are non-narcotic pain relievers. Both medications are prescribed to reduce inflammation in the body. NSAIDs such as aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen are able to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation by blocking the action of the cyclooxygenase enzyme (COX) that catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. Common corticosteroids include prednisone, cortisone, and methylprednisolone. Choose one of these three corticosteroids. The corticosteroid that you choose and then explain how the drug works to reduce inflammation.arrow_forward
