Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The equation for the reaction that is catalyzed by acetylcholinesterase has to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Neurotransmitters: Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit messages from the nervous system to the target cell. They are the chemical messagers where the electrical signal from the nervous system is travelled from one neuron to another to reach the target cell.
Acetylcholine is type of neurotransmitter which is responsible for controlling skeletal muscles.
Presynaptic neurons produces the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which are stored in the small pockets of presynaptic neurons called vesicles from where the neurotransmitters are released according to the need. After neurotransmitter completes its job, it is immediately removed from the cleft of synapse by the decomposition of acetylcholine which is catalyzed by the enzyme, acetylcholinesterase which is present in the synaptic cleft.

- What is acetylcholinesterase? Describe its action.arrow_forwardWhen the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) binds the acetylcholine receptor (a GPCR) on muscle cells, it causes them to contract. ZIGGY, a chemical analog of ACh, also binds to the same acetylcholine receptor on muscle cells, but instead causes the muscle cells to relax. For this reason, it is sometimes prescribed as a muscle relaxer. Explain in 3-4 sentences how ZIGGY could cause muscle relaxation. How can both ZIGGY and ACh bind the same GPCR? And then how can they have different effects on the cells, despite binding to the same receptor on the same cells?arrow_forwardOrganophosphate poisoning is a result of excess acetylcholine at different nerves and receptors in the body because acetylcholinesterase is blocked. Please provide rational to explain how the binding of organophosphate with serine in the acetylcholinesterase enzyme leads to excess accumulation of acetylcholine.arrow_forward
- Construct a mechanism where sarin inhibits acetylcholinerase.arrow_forwardAcetylcholine is a common neurotransmitter released at the synapse. Predict the consequences for muscle activation of decreased acetylcholine esterase activity at nerve-muscle synapses.arrow_forwardDefine the term acetylcholinesterase?arrow_forward
- Correct the following false statement: "Any cell that has the acetylcholine receptor will have the same response as any other cell that also has the acetylcholine receptor when exposed to acetylcholine". Explain why this statement is false.arrow_forwardIn the rare neuromuscular disorder Myasthenia Gravis, autoantibodies are produced which inhibit acetylcholine receptor (nicotinic receptor) activity. Explain how inhibition of acetylcholine receptor activity at the neuromuscular junction will affect the sequence of events in muscular excitation and contraction in response to stimuli, and muscle function? (Mention the effects on all the significant events involved in excitation and contraction of muscles, and how it would affect muscle function).arrow_forwardA GRK inhibitor would have what effect on GPCR inactivation in the presence of a GPCR agonist? (a) it would decrease it; (b) it would maintain the same rate of inactivation; (c) it would increase it.arrow_forward
- Contrast inhibition of excitation at the NMJ by curare & tetrodotoxin. Focusing on the mechanisms of inhibition, the exact step in the process that is inhibited, and the physiological consequences.arrow_forwardExplain the role, using diagrams wherever possible, of G protein coupled receptors mediating the following physiological effects. a. Positive inotropic and positive chronotropic effects in the heart b. Vasoconstriction in vascular smooth muscle cells.arrow_forwardTrace the sequence of events in signal transduction for each of the following second messengers: cyclic AMP, inositol trisphosphate (IP3 ), diacylglycerol (DAG), and calcium ions.arrow_forward
