The pump of a water distribution system is powered by a 15-kW electric motor whose efficiency is 90 percent. The water flow rate through the pump is 50 L/s. The diameters of the inlet and outlet pipes are the same, and the elevation difference across the pump is negligible. If the absolute pressures at the inlet and outlet of the pump are measured to be 100 kPa and 300 kPa, respectively, determine (a) the mechanical efficiency of the pump and (b) the temperature rise of water as it flows through the pump due to mechanical inefficiencies.
If the container is placed in a colder environment, how will it affect the actual heat transfer
and the irreversibility of the system?
How does useful work differ from actual work? For what kinds of systems are these two identical?

- Does a heat engine that has a thermal efficiency of 100 percent necessarily violate the second law of thermodynamics? Explain.arrow_forwardThe driving force for fluid flow is the pressure difference, and a pump operates by raising the pressure of a fluid (by converting the mechanical shaft work to flow energy). A gasoline pump is measured to consume 31 kW of electric power when operating. If the pressure differential between the outlet and inlet of the pump is measured to be 5.9 kPa and the changes in velocity and elevation are negligible, determine the maximum possible volume flow rate of gasoline.arrow_forwardThe water in a large lake is to be used to generate electricity by the installation of a hydraulic turbine-generator at a location where the depth of the water is 50 m. Water is to be supplied at a rate of 5000 kg/s. If the electric power generated is measured to be 1862 kW and the generator efficiency is 95 percent, determine (a) the overall efficiency of the turbine– generator, (b) the mechanical efficiency of the turbine, and (c) the shaft power supplied by the turbine to the generator.arrow_forward

The steam radiator transfers heat at a rate of 10,000 kJ/h, and a 100-W fan is used to distribute the warm air in the room. The rate of heat loss from the room is estimated to be about 5000 kJ/h. If the initial temperature of the room air is 10°C, determine how long it will take for the air temperature to rise to 20oC. Use specific heat values at room temperature, and assume the room to be at 100 kPa and 20 ° C in the morning when she leaves.arrow_forward
