A Notochord is a flexible, rodlike structure that extends the length of the body and is located just below the dorsal tubular nerve cord. In most vertebrates the notochord is replaced by vertebral column that surrounds and protects the dorsal nerve cord. Notochord is replaced during the embryonic development. The flexibility of notochord enables the body to bend, rather than shorten. Cartilage is the main building material of vertebral column.
