Concept explainers
To define:
The given term “notochord” using a book or a dictionary.
Introduction: Vertebrates are animals with backbones. Most chordates are vertebrates. Fishes are vertebrates that have characteristics allowing them to live in water. Vertebrates have a vertebral column and specialized cells that develop from the nerve cord. The vertebral column also called spinal cord is the main feature of all vertebrates.
Answer to Problem 2MI
Notochord is a flexible, rodlike structure that extends the length of the body and is located just below the dorsal tubular nerve cord.
Explanation of Solution
Chordates have four main features- a dorsal tubular nerve cord, a notochord, pharyngeal pouches, and a postanal tail.
A Notochord is a flexible, rodlike structure that extends the length of the body and is located just below the dorsal tubular nerve cord. In most vertebrates the notochord is replaced by vertebral column that surrounds and protects the dorsal nerve cord. Notochord is replaced during the embryonic development. The flexibility of notochord enables the body to bend, rather than shorten. Cartilage is the main building material of vertebral column.
