Answer to Problem 34AAP

The chemical formula of the inter-metallic compound is MgAl5.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression to calculate number of gram-moles of manganese (nMg).

 nMg=mMgMMg                                                                                                             (I)

Here, molar mass of manganese is MMg and mass of manganese is mMg.

Write the expression to calculate number of gram-moles of aluminum (nAl).

 nAl=mAlMAl                                                                                                            (II)

Here, molar mass of aluminum is MAl and mass of aluminum is mAl.

Write the expression to calculate total number of gram-moles of compound (n).

 n=nMg+nAl                                                                                                        (III)

Write the expression to calculate gram-mole fraction of manganese (x).

 x=nMgn                                                                                               (IV)

Write the expression to calculate gram-mole fraction of aluminum (y).

 y=nAln                                                                                                  (V)

Conclusion:

It is given that the inter-metallic compound has 84.32wt% aluminum and 15.68wt% manganese. Then, the masses of aluminum and manganese are 84.32g and 15.68g respectively.

The molar masses of manganese and aluminum are 24.31g/mol and 26.98g/mol respectively.

Substitute 24.31g/mol for MMg and 15.68g for mMg in Equation (I).

 nMg=15.68g24.31g/mol=0.645mol

Substitute 26.98g/mol for MAl and 84.32g for mAl in Equation (II).

 nAl=84.32g26.96g/mol=3.125mol

Substitute 0.645mol for nMg and 3.125mol for nAl in Equation (III).

 n=0.645mol+3.125mol=3.770mol

Substitute 0.645mol for nMg and 3.770mol for n in Equation (IV).

 x=0.645mol3.770mol=0.17

Substitute 3.125mol for nAl and 3.770mol for n in Equation (V).

 y=3.125mol3.770mol=0.83

The general expression for chemical formula of inter-metallic compound of magnesium and aluminium.

  MgxAly

The gram-mole fractions of manganese and aluminum present in the compound are 0.17 and 0.83 respectively.

Then, the chemical formula of the inter-metallic compound is,

  Mg0.17Al0.83

To make the mole fractions into whole number, multiply the x,y values by 6.

  x=0.17×6=1.021

  y=0.83×6=4.985

Thus, the chemical formula of the inter-metallic compound is MgAl5.
