In 1780, in what is now referred to as “Brady’s Leap,” Captain Sam Brady of the U.S. Continental Army escaped certain death from his enemies by running horizontally off the edge of the cliff above Ohio’s Cuyahoga River, which is confined at that spot to a gorge. He landed safely on the far side of the river. It was reported that he leapt 22 ft across while falling 20 ft. Tall tale, or possible?
Figure P3.63
a. What is the minimum speed with which he’d need to run off the edge of the cliff to make it safely to the far side of the river?
b. The world-record time for the 100 m dash is approximately 10 s. Given this, is it reasonable to expect Brady to be able to run fast enough to achieve Brady’s leap?

- A runner first runs a displacement A of 3.30 km due south, and then a second displacement B that points due east. The magnitude of the resultant displacement A + B is 5.27 km. What is the magnitude (in m) of B? What is the angle that A + B makes relative to due south? (Your answer must be a positive number from 0 to 180 degrees).arrow_forwardCalculate the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the two vectors a) 50 km E and b) 70 km 60* NE.2) An airplane travels at 4.5 x 10^2 km due east and then travels an unknown distance due north. Finally, it returns to its starting point by travelling a distance of 525 km. How far did the airplane travelled due north?arrow_forwardA golf ball is hit off a tee at the edge of a cliff. Its x and y coordinates as functions of time are given by x = 17.2t and y = 4.16t − 4.90t2, where x and y are in meters and t is in seconds. (a) Write a vector expression for the ball's position as a function of time, using the unit vectors î and ĵ. (Give the answer in terms of t.) = m By taking derivatives, do the following. (Give the answers in terms of t.) (b) obtain the expression for the velocity vector as a function of time = m/s(c) obtain the expression for the acceleration vector as a function of time = m/s2(d) Next use unit-vector notation to write expressions for the position, the velocity, and the acceleration of the golf ball at t = 3.18 s. = m = m/s = m/s2arrow_forward
- A novice golfer on the green takes three strokes to sink the ball. The successive displacements are 3.9m to the north, 9.4 m 45° north of east, and 9.5m 50° west of south. Starting at the same initial point, an expert could make the hole in a single displacement.
