Chapter 30, Problem 30A

The real image produced by a converging lens is inverted. Our eyes have converging lenses. Does this mean the images you see are upside down on your retinas? Explain.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

Image formed by eye is upside down or not

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

Image formed by converging lens is upside down. Our eyes have converging lens hence image formed by eye is upside down but our brain learned that images which are received from retina is to turn a round

Concept:

Light incidents in the cornea of our eye. The intensity of light (amount of light) is regulated by the iris and pupil is opening through the iris. Image is formed by pupil and lens which is focused on retina. There is one spot on retina which is called blind spot. The blind spot is place from where nerves carrying all information leave the eye in a narrow bundle. Our eye have converging lens hence image formed by eye lens is upside down but our mind already learned that image received from retina is to turn around.

Conclusion:

Image formed by eye lens is inverted but our mind turns it around, hence image we see on retina is upright.
