An action potential begins when ___ .

  1. a. a neuron reaches threshold potential
  2. b. voltage-gated potassium gates open
  3. c. voltage-gated .sodium gates dose
  4. d. sodium-potassium pumps stop operating

Summary Introduction

Introduction: Neurons are brain cells that are specialized to transmit nerve impulses. There are three types of neurons: sensory neurons, interneurons, and motor neurons. In vertebrates, theseneurons play an important role in the flow of information. The voltage across a cell’s membrane is called as membrane potential. The membrane potential of a neuron that is not being activated is known as resting potential. The cytoplasm contains negatively-charged proteins and amino acids that are lacking in the interstitial fluid. The protein remains trapped in the plasma membrane, as it cannot cross the neuron’s plasma membrane. The sodium ions (Na+) and potassium ions (K+) move in and out with the help of transport proteins.

Explanation

Reason for the correct statement:

For an action potential to occur, the cytoplasm in the neuron’s trigger zone must reach the threshold potential. The voltage-gated sodium channels will open at threshold potential.

Hence, option a. is correct.

Reasons for the incorrect statements:

Option b. is given as,“voltage-gated potassium gates open”. The voltage-gated sodium channels will open at threshold potential, not the voltage-gated potassium gates. Therefore, option b...
