Maximum point: If the both the values of x are less than the x of critical point.

Minimum point: If the both the values of x are more than the x of critical point.

Neither minimum nor maximum point: If one value of x is higher and other point is lower than the critical point.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

Critical point is maximum, minimum, or neither.

Calculation:

Check the values of x a bit to the left and right of a critical point (P) . If both the values are less than P, then the point is maximum point. If both the values are greater than the value of P, then the point is minimum point. If one point is higher and one point is lower than the point P, then in this case the critical point is neither maximum, nor minimum. The graph below shows the three cases.
