Chapter 37, Problem 2AC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

How does cyclosporine prevent rejection of transplanted organs.

Introduction:

Cyclosporine drugs are given to the patient who undergoes organ transplantation. Cyclosporine is responsible for the inhibition of cytokine secretion which stimulates helper T cell to divide and proliferate to induce an immune response against nonself cells.

Summary Introduction

To hypothesize:

A hypothesis to explain the phenomenon that why patients who received cyclosporine following transplants develop various kinds of cancers many years later.

Introduction:

To reduce the risk of organ transplant failure cyclosporine drugs are given to the patient who undergoes organ transplantation. It inhibits cytokine secretion which is responsible for the stimulation of immune response. But after many years these patients develop cancers.

One mechanism by which anti-inflammatory medications like steroids work is by decreasing mast cell survival. Given what we learned about the inflammatory process, explain in detail how you think this type of steroid would work to block the process of inflammation
A hypothetical disorder prevents memory cells from forming. What effect would this have on the immune system? B lymphocytes would be affected, but not T lymphocytes, Vaccinations would no longer be useful, The inflammatory response would no longer be effective, or The adaptive immune response would cease to function, but the innate immune response would continue to function normally.
Which of the following statements are TRUE about the process of inflammation? (Select all that apply)     Inflammation can occur with only the innate immune response involved.     Leukocytes or white blood cells are found everywhere in the body to carry out inflammation as needed     Growth factor from non-skin cells is responsible for the formation of scar tissue in place of the damaged skin cells     The increase of warmed blood to a site of injury comes from the hypothalamus      Phagocytes engulf invading microbes and dead white blood cells      Phagocytosis is used during inflammation to make sure there is no debris
