Question
Chapter 37, Problem 3Q
Summary Introduction
To explain:
The WT (wild-type) and the gi (gigas) responses in a flowering pea plant with the help of a model representing their genetic control.
Introduction:
The flowering pea plant is controlled by the FT (flowering locus T) gene. This gene has two alleles, WT and the mutant gigas (gi). The WT allele provides the mobile signal, which is able to diffuse to the shoots, thereby inducing flowering in the plant. To test for the presence of the mutant gene, the grafting is done in the plants.

a. Using pollen from a carpelate flower to fertilize a staminate flower would be successful.
b. If the plants used gametophytic self-incompatibility, half of the pollen would be successful.
c. If the plants used sporophytic self-incompatibility, half of the pollen would be successful.
d. Pollen from an S2S5 plant can never pollinate an S1S5 flower.

- A group of students have carried out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the amount of growth hormone BAP in the culture medium and the growth of shoot of jckplant. They have supplemented the medium with 4 different concentration of growth hormone which is (1 mg/L ,2 mg/L BAP,3 mg/L 4 mg/L) of BAP.According to the result after eight weeks, BAP at 2 mg/L had given better response with respect to shoot induction, shoot multiplication, length of shoot, and number of leaves per explants when compare with other amount of BAP. The lowest shoot development is BAP at 1 mg/L.
