WRITE ABOUT A THEME: ORGANIZATION In 1918, an epidemic of sleeping sickness caused an unusual rigid paralysis in some survivors, similar to symptoms of advanced Parkinson's disease. Years later, L-dopa (below, left), a chemical used to treat Parkinson's disease, was given to some of these patients. L-dopa was remarkably effective at eliminating the paralysis, at least temporarily. However, its enantiomer, D-dopa (right), was subsequently shown to have no effect at all, as is the case for Parkinson's disease. In a short essay (100-150 words), discuss how the effectiveness of one enantiomer and not the other illustrates the theme of structure and function.

- Write the Structure Activity Relationship (SAR) of Nifedipine ? Please write at your own words.arrow_forwardA range of substituted biphenyls have been evaluated as antagonists of the GPCR neurokinin-1 (NK1) , a target for the treatment of cancer chemotherapy endured nausea and vomiting. With reference to table 1, discuss the structure activity relationships related to the nature of the substituent R1 and linker group L. In your answer, aim not just to identify trends, but to give possible explanations to them. Include as much detail as possible.arrow_forwardFrom a medicinal chemistry (and a pharmacologist) perspective, functional groups provide specific properties and behaviors that allow drug molecules to exert their desired PD and PK effects. The key point here is that each individual group within a drug molecule can serve to provide one or more specific roles, tasks, or functions. The following table summarizes a series of drug discovery lead optimization for targeting a certain renal disease. Explain the basis for changing the R- functionality at the para- position. Please explain in as much detail as you need and by using scientific justifications, which one of the 4 candidates (526-529), presents the most viable investigational drug candidate, given the information provided below? - Which of the following situations would produce a Hill plot with nH < 1.0? Explain your reasoning in each case.(a) The protein has multiple subunits, each with a single ligand-binding site. Binding of ligand to one site decreases the binding affinity of other sites for the ligand.(b) The protein is a single polypeptide with two ligand-binding sites, each having a different affinity for the ligand.(c) The protein is a single polypeptide with a single ligand-binding site. As purified, the protein preparation is heterogeneous, containing some protein molecules that are partially denatured and thus have a lower binding affinity for the ligand.arrow_forwardName three biologically active peptides. Mention their functions.arrow_forwardIt is well known that sphingomyelin interacts with cholesterol and high affinity. What do you suppose is the structural basis for such interactions? Be specific.arrow_forward
- Chemistry As discussed, McArdle's disease might occur while glycogen is synthesized. What analog inhibitor might cause this problem? In what step is this problem happening and why. Explain in DETAIL.arrow_forwardBased on the structure below: 1. Based on the chemistry, is the drug phototoxic? (Yes or No) 2. Is the drug is acid-stable? (Yes or No) 3. Which of the following is TRUE about the structure shown? A. The drug is doxycycline. B. The drug is resistant against dehydration. C. The drug forms into a lactone when dehydrated. The drug is bactericidal. D. The drug is phototoxic.arrow_forwardWhat are the possible effects of taking multivitamin tablets to your overall health? Explain in terms of biochemistry.arrow_forward

Draw each peptide at physiological pH. Circle each ionizable functional group in your drawing.b. Briefly explain why changing aspartate to threonine changes the number of ionizable functionalgroups in the peptide chain.c.
