Chapter 4, Problem 17Q
Summary Introduction

To explain: The nature of “polymer-brush” in the neurofilament proteins.

Concept introduction:

Neurofilament proteins are a group of proteins which belong to the family of intermediate filaments and are present mostly in the nerve cell axons. The main function of these proteins is for maintenance of axonal transport, determining the shape of cells and caliber of axonal projections. These proteins contain long hundreds of amino-acids which were modified by the phosphate group addition and were known as “polymer brush”. A polymer brush is usually referred to a surface covering consisting of polymers which binds to a surface. Also the C-terminal region will be an unstructured polypeptide.
