Chapter 4, Problem 20Q
Summary Introduction

To explain: The paradox of migration of molecules through Gel filtration chromatography.

Introduction:

The chromatography which separates the molecules based on their size is called as Gel filtration chromatography (or gel permeation or molecular exclusion chromatography). In this type of chromatography, the stationary phase is made up of porous beads with particular pore size used specifically for separation of molecules within that pore size. A mixture of solution is added to the column and it percolates down along with the mobile phase. The molecules with smaller size easily get into the beads through the pores while the larger one moves down the column. Later, the adsorbed molecules can be collected using a suitable elutant.
