Concept explainers
Concept introduction:
Predetermined overhead allocation:
Activity Based Costing (ABC):
ABC costing method is generally used to allocate the overhead costs to the product using activity rates differently for each activity. Unlike traditional method, the ABC costing method does not use the plant wide overhead rate, rather it used different allocation rate for different production activity.
To indicate:
The more accurate method between the traditional and ABC costing

- Which is not a task typically associated with ABC systems? A. calculating the overhead application rate for each cost pool B. applying a single cost rate C. identifying a cost driver D. more correctly allocating overhead costsarrow_forwardWhich is not a step In activity-based costing? A. identify the activities performed by the organization B. identify the cost driver(s) associated with each activity C. compute a cost rate per production D. assign costs to products by multiplying the cost driver rate by the volume of the cost driver units consumed by the productarrow_forwardHappy Trails has this information for its manufacturing: Â Its income statement under absorption costing is: Prepare an income statement with variable costing and a reconciliation statement between both methods.arrow_forward
- Activity-based costing systems: A. use a single predetermined overhead rate based on machine hours instead of on direct labor B. frequently increase the overhead allocation to at least one product while decreasing the overhead allocation to at least one other product C. limit the number of cost pools D. always result in an increase of at least one products selling pricearrow_forwardTrail Outfitters has this information for its manufacturing: Its income statement under absorption costing is as follows: Prepare an income statement with variable costing and a reconciliation statement between both methods.arrow_forwardWhat is the proper order of tasks In an ABC system? identify the cost drivers, assign the costs to the products, calculate the overhead application rate for each cost pool, identify the cost pools assign the costs to the products, identify the cost drivers, calculate the overhead application rate for each cost pool, identify the cost pools identify the cost drivers, identify the cost pools, calculate the overhead application rate for each cost pool, assign the costs to the products identify the cost pools, identify the cost drivers, calculate the overhead application rate for each cost pool, assign the costs to the productsarrow_forward
- Lean manufacturing uses value streams to produce a family of products that require the same manufacturing sequence. Value-stream costing is an approach often used to determine the unit product costs in a lean manufacturing environment. Which of the following best describes how unit costs are calculated using value-stream costing? a. Value stream costs divided by units shipped b. Value stream costs divided by units produced c. (Total prime costs + overhead costs assigned to the value stream using a plantwide rate) divided by units produced d. Activity-based costing assignments within the value streamarrow_forwardCaseys Kitchens three cost pools and overhead estimates are as follows: Compare the overhead allocation using: A. The traditional allocation method B. The activity based costing method (Hint: the traditional method uses machine hours as the allocation base.)arrow_forwardFrenchys has three cost pools and an associated cost driver to allocate the costs to the product. The cost pools, cost driver, estimated overhead, and estimated activity for the cost pool are: What is the predetermined overhead rate for each activity?arrow_forward
- Customs has three cost pools and an associated cost driver to allocate the costs to the product. The cost pools, cost driver, estimated overhead, and estimated activity for the cost pool are: What is the predetermined overhead rate for each activity?arrow_forwardWhich of the following product situations is better suited to job order costing than to process costing? A. Each product batch is exactly the same as the prior batch. B. The costs are easily traced to a specific product. C. Costs are accumulated by department. D. The value of work in process is based on assigning standard costs.arrow_forwardActivity-based management includes both process value analysis and activity-based costing. Which of the following features is primarily associated with process value analysis? a. Defining root causes of each activity b. Identifying cost objects and activity drivers c. Calculating activity rate d. Assigning costs to cost objectsarrow_forward
