In shorthorn cattle, coat color may be red, white, or roan. Roan is an intermediate phenotype expressed as a mixture of red and white hairs. The following data were obtained from various crosses: red * red ¡ all red white * white ¡ all white red * white ¡ all roan roan * roan ¡ 1/4 red:1/2 roan: 1/4 white How is coat color inherited? What are the genotypes of parents and offspring for each cross?
The tiny blue-eyed Mary flower is often one of the first flowers seen in the spring in some regions of the United States. The flower is normally blue, but sometimes a white or pink flower variation is found. The following data were obtained after several crosses.
A student claims that these flower colors are an inherited trait, and the F1 and F2 phenotypes of the flowers arising from the pink and white cross can best be explained by epistasis, where another gene product influences phenotype expression.
This data supports this claim because in order to produce a __________ (pink, white, or blue) flower, a gene for a switch that 'turns on' the color gene would be recessive, meaning it has a mutation that causes it to be 'off'. In order to express a color, this switch needs to be in the dominant form.
The color gene is a structural gene that has two variants: a dominant trait, ______ (pink, white, or blue) and a recessive _______ (pink, white, or blue) variety.
In crosses between mutant mice, you find the following patterns in the genotype for the A locus containing alleles A1, A2, A3 and A4:
What would be the best explanation for the inheritance and why?

- Among dogs, short hair is dominant to long hair and dark coat color is dominant to white (albino) coat color. Assume that these two coat traits are caused by independently segregating gene pairs.
