If a carbon atom is attached to only one other carbon atom, that carbon atom is called primary carbon.
If a carbon atom is attached to two other carbon atoms, that carbon is called secondary carbon.
To name an alkane follow the following rules as given by IUPAC system:
The longest chain of carbon atoms is to be identified as this chain determines the parent name for the alkane.
The longest carbon chain is to be numbered.
The ending for the name of alkane is –ane.
