Chapter 4, Problem 3TC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The type of functions performed by the artificial skin while Kristen’s own skin is repairing itself.

Introduction:

The case study of the patient Kristen who is suffering from burns injury reveals that the skin is not regenerating itself due to the damage to epidermis, dermis and hypodermis layers of the skin. Scientists have developed artificial skin in petri plates with the supply of nutrients, buffer, metabolites and collagen fibers which provide nourishment for the growth of skin cells. These cells are transplanted and grafted on the region of the skin which has been damaged due to burns. A plastic layer is provided with collagen fibers to prevent the dehydration of skin and infection caused by microorganisms like bacteria. The adhesive polysaccharides layer is added to initiate the division process in the skin cells. The functions performed by the artificial layer is the rapid growth of the cells, prevention from dehydration and infection caused by microorganisms.
