Income statement formation: There is no standard dictating the formation of the income statement, however, there are two general approaches, single-step, and multi-step format. Single-step format lists all revenues and gains first and then lists all expenses and losses subtotalled and subtracted from total revenue to ascertain net income, whereas the multi-step format classifies and reports items as subtotals.
