Prices of diamonds are determined by what is known as the 4 Cs: cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. The prices of diamonds go up as the carat weight increases, but the increase is not smooth. For example, the difference between the size of a 0.99-carat diamond and a 1-carat diamond is undetectable to the naked human eye, but the price of a 1-carat diamond tends to be much higher than the price of a 0.99 diamond. In this question, we use two random samples of diamonds, 0.99 carats and 1 carat, each sample of size 23, and compare the average prices of the diamonds. In order to be able to compare equivalent units, we first divide the price for each diamond by 100 times its weight in carats. That is, for a 0.99-carat diamond, we divide the price by 99. For a 1 carat diamond, we divide the price by 100. The distributions and some sample statistics are shown below

Let x represent the number of years after 1970. Find a formula in slope intercept form for a linear function f that models the data. F(x)=???
Scientists in Malaysia have collected data revealing that there is a linear relationship between the length (snout to vent) of the beaked sea snake and the length of its catfish prey such that
l(x) = 2.41 + 0.12x,
where x is the snout-vent length (cm) of the snake and l(x) is the predicted length (cm) of the catfish. Source: Biotropica.
a. Use the function above to estimate the size of catfish that a snake which has a snout-vent length of 70 cm will choose for prey.
b. Calculate the derivative of this function and interpret the results.

On a particular day, the infectious virus had been contracted by 15 students. 3 days later, 135 students had contracted the virus. The number of infected students grows at a rate that is jointly proportional to the current number of students who have contracted the virus and the difference between the total number of students in the dorm and the number who have contracted the virus. a. Find a function that gives the number of students who have contracted the virus at any time t. Round to 5 decimal places, if necessary. P (t) = b. Find the number of students who have contracted the virus 5 days after its initial outbreak. Round to the nearest student. P (5)arrow_forward
- An environmentalist wants to determine the relationships between the numbers (in thousands) of forest fires over the year and the number (in hundred thousands) of acres burned. The data for 8 recent years are shown. Required: Find the coefficient of determination. Only the final answer should be rounded-off to TWO decimal places.arrow_forwardThe electric power consumed each month by a chemical plant is thought to be related to the average ambient temperature (x₁), the number of days in the month (x₂), the average product purity (x3), and the tons of product produced (x4).
