Interpretation:

Fischer projections of the two stereoisomeric tartaric acids are to be written and the configurations at each of their chirality centers is to be specified.

Concept introduction:

The absolute configuration is the three-dimensional spatial arrangement of substituents attached at the chiral center.

In Fischer projections, the molecule is oriented so that the vertical bonds at the chiral center are directed away from the observer and the horizontal bonds point towards the observer. A projection of the bonds onto the page is a cross.

In a Fischer projection, exchange of two groups reverses the configuration of the chirality center.
