Chapter 42, Problem 13TYU
Summary Introduction

To explain: The reason that adaptation in Argyroneta aquatica for storing air underwater is advantageous over having gills.

Introduction: The diving bell spider (Argyroneta aquatica) lives inside the water. It is dark brown in color, but the presence of hair on the abdomen makes it appear dark gray. It breathes air like other spiders. The air gets trapped by the dense hair on its abdomen and legs. This helps in breathing under water. The trapped air gives a silvery appearance. The diving bells are irregular sheets of silk and protein-based hydrogel. It allows the diffusion of gases but do not allow water to go through. The net diffusion of oxygen in and carbon dioxide out is maintained by the spider.

Perch, Frog and Pig. 1.  Why do these organisms require a specialized organ to increase surface area for gas exchange?  Discuss organismal volume relative to surface area in your answer. 2.  Why are these respiratory structures associated with a large blood supply?
Compare the efficiency of fish gills with mammalian lungs.
Compare the two types of gas exchange systems in invertebrates.        Based on your observation of the tracheal system of an aquatic insect: mosquito wriggler) & book lung systems (in invertebrates: spider (Araneae), explain how these systems are similar and how they differ from one another.  (i.e. structures involved & relation to circulatory system). In cockroach, do the spiracles occur in pairs? What do you think happens if you block oxygen from coming into the body and prevent carbon dioxide from leaving?
