How does a field accelerating relay prevent current excess that may occur because of adjusting the rheostat to change speeds?

To determine

Explain the prevention process provided by a field accelerating relay during current excess that may occur because of adjusting the rheostat to change speeds.

Explanation of Solution

A field accelerating or full field relay is a relay that is used with the starters to control adjustable speed motors. This relay can provide the full field during starting period and limits the current of the armature during sudden changes of the speed. The coil of the accelerating relay is connected in series with the armature of the motor.

When inrush current occurs during startup or when there is a sudden increase in speed, it causes an excessive armature current in the motor and the coil can close the contacts of the relay...
