Answer to Problem 70CP

The minimum photon energy required is 127 MeV.

Explanation of Solution

Given decay reaction is,

    p+γp+π0

From energy conservation,

    mpc21u2/c2+Eγ=mpc2+mπc2                                                                  (I)

Here, Eγ is the energy photon, mp is the mass of proton, mπ is the mass of pion and c is the speed of light.

From momentum conservation,

    mpu1u2/c2Eγc=0                                                                 (II)

Combine equation I and II,

    mpc21u2/c2+mpc21u2/c2uc=mpc2+mπc2                                                        (III)

Conclusion:

Substitute 135.0 MeV for mπc2 and 938.3 MeV for mpc2 in equation III.

    (938.3 MeV)(1+u/c)(1u/c)(1+u/c)=938.3 MeV+135.0 MeVuc=0.134

Substitute 0.134 for uc in above equation to get energy of photon.

    Eγ=127 MeV

Therefore, the minimum photon energy required is 127 MeV.

Answer to Problem 70CP

The wavelength of the photon at the peak of blackbody spectrum is 1.06 mm

Explanation of Solution

Write the equation for peak wavelength.

    λmaxT=2.898 mmK                                                         (IV)

Here, λmax is the peak wavelength and T is the temperature.

Conclusion:

Substitute 2.73 K for T in equation IV.

    λmax=2.898 mmK2.73 K=1.06 mm

Therefore, the wavelength of the photon at the peak of blackbody spectrum is 1.06 mm.

Answer to Problem 70CP

The energy of the photon is 1.17×103 eV

Explanation of Solution

Write the equation for energy.

    Eγ=hf=hcλ                                                         (V)

Here, h is the Plank’s constant, f is the frequency and λ is the wavelength.

Conclusion:

Substitute 1.06 mm for λ and 1 240 eV109 m for hc in equation V.

    Eγ=1 240 eV109 m1.06×10-3 m=1.17×103 eV

Therefore, the energy of the photon is 1.17×103 eV.

Answer to Problem 70CP

The energy of the photon with reference to Earth reference frame is 5.81×1019 eV

Explanation of Solution

In the primed reference frame, the proton is moving to the right at uc=0.134.

The photon moving to the left with hf=1.27×108 eV.

In the unprimed frame, hf=1.17×103 eV.

From the Doppler effect equation the speed of primed frame is,

    1.27×108=1+v/c1v/c1.17×103vc=11.71×1022

Conclusion:

Then, the speed of proton is,

    uc=u/c+v/c1+uv/c2=0.134+11.71×10221+0.134(11.71×1022)=11.30×1022

Then the energy of proton is,

    mpc21u2/c2=938.3 MeV1(11.30×1022)2=6.19×1010×938.3×106 eV=5.81×1019 eV

Therefore, the energy of the photon with reference to Earth reference frame is 5.81×1019 eV.

Suppose a W − created in a bubble chamber lives for 5.00×10−25 s. What distance does it move in this time if it is traveling at 0.900 c? Since this distance is too short to make a track, the presence of the W − must be inferred from its decay products. Note that the time is longer than the givenW − lifetime, which can be due to the statistical nature of decay or time dilation.
