Question
Chapter 4.S, Problem 22P
Summary Introduction
To determine: The most cost-effective option.
Introduction:
Mean time between failures (MTBF):
The mean time between failures is a term which denotes the time that is elapsed between the first failure of a product and the second failure of a product. It is calculated during the normal system operation.
Mean time to repair (MTTR):
The mean time to repair is the time incurred for a device to fail and also the time elapsed to repair the device. The repair is carried out after the failure of the device.

A designer estimates that she can (a) increase the average time between failures of a part by 5 percent at a cost of $450, or (b) reduce the average repair time by 10 percent at a cost of $200. Which option would be more cost-effective? Currently, the average time between failures is 100 hours andthe average repair time is 4 hours.
Even after taking all appropriate steps to produce a high integrity system, some remaining faults will remain. How would you ensure system safety and reliability in practical approaches?
