Based on the forecasted demand from the distributors who currently buy Home-Style cookies and the projected forecast for the retail shop, Home-Style’s operations manager has determined he needs to increase the capacity of the production line. Use the following diagram of the existing four-step cookie production process to answer the following:
What is the current hourly capacity of this four-step cookie production process?
Which action would yield the greatest increase in hourly process capacity: 1) increase the capacity of the Mix dough step by 15%, 2) increase the capacity of the Roll dough step by 10%, or 3) increase the capacity of the Cut Cookies step by 10%.
What is the new hourly capacity of this four-step cookie production process?
A manager must decide which type of equipment to buy, Type A or Type B. Type A equipment cost $15,000 each, and Type B cost $11,000 each. The equipment can be operated 8 hours a day, 250 days a year. Either machine can be used to perfom two types of chemical analysis, C1 and C2. Annual service requirements and processing times are shown in the following table. Which type of equipment should be purchased, and how many of that type wil be need? The goal is to minimize total purchase cost.

The following diagram describes a service system where customers go through either of the two parallel three-step processes (A1-A2-A3 or B1-B2-B3) and then merge into a single line for the final step (F4). Each step has one worker assigned to it (total of 7 workers). The numbers in parentheses are the times in minutes for each step of the process.
( see attached image)
What is the capacity of the entire system in terms of customers per hour? Hint: Start with calculating hourly capacity of A1-A2-A3 and B1-B2-B3.
How much will the system capacity change if a second worker is assigned to step F4?
