The process of separation of oxytocin and vasopressin from an extract of the pituitary gland.
Introduction:
Oxytocin and vasopressin are peptide hormones. These are synthesized by the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. Oxytocin playsa role in the contraction of smooth musclecells in the uterus and mammary glands. Vasopressin stimulates resorption of water from the kidney. Both of these hormones can be separated by gel filtration chromatography.
