Summary Introduction

Introduction: Operant conditioning or instrumental conditioning is a learning process by which the intensity of a behavior is controlled by reward or punishment. The stimulus that results in reward or punishment controls the exhibition or inhibition of the behavior. Operant behavior is voluntary and involves trial and error learning. The animal first learns to associate one of its behaviors with either reward or punishment and then tends to repeat or avoid that behavior.
