Chapter 53.12, Problem 3LO
Summary Introduction
To determine: The way in which haplodiploidy influences kin selection in the eusocial insects.
Introduction: Eusocial insects are truly social insects. A hive of honeybee contains one queen that lays the eggs and thousands of her offspring female workers with nonfunctional ovaries. It is defined by the reproductive division of labor, cooperative care of their brood, overlapping of generation. The functional role of the male is only one that is to try find hive and mate with the queen, so they can start new colony.

Explain the sexual dimotrphism in cockroaches.
With your knowledge of sexual selection theory, can you formulate a hypothesis that explains why female courtship might have evolved in this species? Is there anything about pipefish biology that might support your hypothesis?
What causes sexual dimorphism? Give some examples of sexually dimorphic species, and why you think that form of sexual dimorphism arose.
