Chapter 53.2, Problem 1EQ
Summary Introduction
To determine: The reason that led the investigators to hypothesize that Toll protein may serve an immune function in Drosophila.
Introduction: Scientists worked to discover the way in which the embryos develop into adults. However, they discovered a protein known as Toll protein. These proteins bind to a receptor known as TLRs. It stands for “Toll-like receptors”. Drosophila melanogaster is a type of fly that generally feeds on fruits. Toll protein helps in the development of embryos of Drosophila melanogaster.

The coronavirus pandemic that first emerged in 2019 resulted in a large number of people contracting the COVID-19 disease
caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although a large percentage of those infected
experienced only mild symptoms, a significant percentage of individuals without complicating health conditions fell seriously ill
or died.
Suppose researchers hypothesize that a phenomenon called "cytokine storm" may contribute to having a more severe illness
from COVID-19 disease. Cytokines normally direct the immune system to sites of infection in the body and increase
inflammation. However, in cytokine storm, excessive cytokines and inflammation leads to hyperinflammation that can cause
damage to the tissues.
The researchers propose that otherwise healthy patients who have a severe reaction to COVID-19 infection may be experiencing
cytokine storm. The researchers analyze qPCR data from confirmed COVID-19 patients with mild…
1) Are NGN2-induced neurons (NGN2-iNs) the same as the cells in neural organoids? If not, how are they different?
2) Forced expression of the transcription factor neurogenin 2 (NGN2) induces human neurons, but to mature into electrophysiologically active neurons the require the presence of another cell type: what is that?
3)What kind of expression of NGN2 is associated with a central nervous system (CNS)-like cell? How do you know this?

Each array was performed in triplicate (columns) (Gerson, 2012). B. β4 integrin is normally involved in attaching epithelial cells to the extracellular matrix and holding them in place, but in cancer, it can be involved in attaching cells to actin and increasing motility as well as in cell signaling. If RNA sequencing led to the identification of two genes, gene X and gene Y, what are two experiments you could do to study the functions of these two genes?arrow_forwardCan you please help me by drawing a serie of schematic figures that demonstrates the information in the paragraph below. The carboxy terminus of the p53 protein acts as an allosteric regulator of sequence-specific DNA binding. This was demonstrated initially by Hupp et al. (1992) using a bacterially expressed protein. Recombinant bacterial p53 bound poorly to DNA, and binding could be enhanced by the addition of antibodies specific to the C-terminal region of the protein. Phosphorylation of Ser315 and Ser392 within this domain also enhance sequence-specific DNA binding. Dephosphorylation of Ser376 of p53 after IR allows the association of 14-3-3 proteins with the C terminus of the protein (Waterman et al., 1998). Stavridi et al. (2001) demonstrate that this interaction is required for p53 to activate the downstream gene, p21waf1/cip1, and for the G1 cell cycle checkpoint arrest response. Interestingly, this dephosphorylation event seems to be ATM-dependent, possibly by a phosphatase…arrow_forward
