Endosymbiosis is a theory that explains how eukaryotes originated from the prokaryotes in the prebiotic Earth. It says that organelles such as the chloroplast and the mitochondria were free-living organisms that were ingested or endocytosed by the prebiotic bacteria. This lead to the formation of modern-day eukaryotes.
